HOW to Steal Bases… Lot’s… Like Rickey…
Athletes have 3 basic options when accelerating from a lateral start
  1. Turn and Run
  2. Crossover
  3. Drop Step
At Sparta we focus on teaching drop step acceleration mechanics to our athletes that often find themselves in positions where lateral acceleration is necessary (baseball and basketball).  The drop step allows athletes to maximize their use of angles and force production (GRF).  These factors make the drop step more effective than the terribly inefficient turn and run and even highly touted crossover. I hope you have enjoyed our first weekly segment of Sparta Movement Education.  Check back every Monday for more in-depth analysis of the mechanics behind the movements.

  1. I can remember Rickey Henderson doing exactly what you recommend.

Next, please take on the same challenge when facing forward – most common for football backs and wide receivers.
