Most of the professional athletes we see are forced to adhere to excessively conservative strength training. I know pro football teams that have prevented their athletes from even touching a barbell. A couple of major rules under this philosophy include -no overhead lifting for baseball players of any kind -no barbell squats below parallel for basketball or football players to protect the knees
These athletes don’t need to be breaking record weights in the above movements but the flexibility and stability benefits are well documented for both the shoulder (see SpartaPoint 1/21/09) and ankle (see SpartaPoint 1/7/09).
While these athletes avoid getting hurt during these movements, they can get injured doing something else (recently an NBA player broke his arm doing a simple movement on the physioball). Another concern is that this conservative training will also guarantee a lower performance and greater injury risk in their sport.
